I usually rely on voices, appearance (as others mentioned weapons, armor, clothes and armbands can tell you what they are) and mostly behavior (PMC bots tend to act differently). You can also try to find a scav or two and stick with them. If a PMC shows up they will get aggroed and will lead you to the 'bad guy'.
